Introduction

Seminar proesentation on pneumonia, epidemiology, aetiology, pathogenesis, clinical features, complications, and management of pneumonia.
ØPneumonia is an infection of pulmonary parenchyma.
ØIt is the inflammation of the lung parenchyma, with consolidation of the affected part
ØFilling of alveolar air spaces with exudate, inflammatory cells and fibrin.

Epidemiology

uIn  UK, the Incidence pneumonia is 5-11/1000
uIn the US 12/1000. 4 million cases annually
uAetiology of pneumonia in 50% of cases – viral
uThere are no data from Nigeria
u1979-Marcfarlane, Adegboye et al , Zaria- 74 patients, 50% had strep Ags, 16.2% with mycoplasma
uBlack men(26.6 deaths per 100,000 population) are more likely to die from pneumonia compared with white men(23 deaths per 100,000 population),whereas black women(18.2 deaths per 100,000) and white women(18.2 deaths per 100,000 population)are almost equally likely to die from pneumonia.
